Dear Diary,
This morning I almost got in a fight with this boy Cecil Jacobs. He told me that Atticus was defending a Black Man. It made me very angry. I didn't know about it, so i asked Jem. He told me I had to talk to Atticus. When I asked Atticus I used a word he said was common that i shouldn't be using, but he also agreed that he is defending a Black Man. I questioned him looking for anwsers to the question why. Atticus told me he had to do it because if he didn't he couldn't hold his head up in town and he couldn't represent our country. I didn't really understand why he had to do what he did, but I figured it was better to just leave it at what I was told.
Later I got in a fight with my cousin Francis over the same situation. It was over people disapproving and having something to say about Atticus and what he was doing. I know I broke my promise to Atticus and I feel completely guilty, but both boys made me so angry I couldn't hold back and forgot all about my promise. I feel bad and Atticus doesn't know yet, but it makes me feel even worse that he doesn't know. Right now I'm in my room because I was hit and sent here as my punishment. Now I am thinking of ways to tell Atticus so I don't have a quilty concious.

ReplyDeleteI wish you would stop getting into fights over my career and decisions because I do not want you to get hurt. If you just ignore the critisim, it will eventually go away. Don't use bad words about peoples race even if the other kids in school do because it is rude and you could be hurting other peoples feelings. Please get your act together and start behaving.

ReplyDeleteI heard what is happening with the whole thing with Atticus defending a black man and i think it is horrible what people are saying about it. I really wish i was in Maycomb so i could help stick up for Atticus. I also heard that you beat up Francis good job! But you do know that is not the way a girl should be acting. Tell Jem that i said hello. And i can't wait to see you both this summer.

ReplyDeleteI can't believe you beat up Francis. I don't think you should have done it but it's your own descision. I think your uncle Jack shouldn't have hit you. I hope you tell Atticus. I can't wait to see you and Jem again.
